Diet better than pills

August 31, 2016

The Mediterranean diet has been long praised for its health benefits, but having healing properties may have sounded a bit of overstatement. Yet, this is exactly what Italian scientists found out at patients with heart conditions.

The diet rich in vegetables, nuts, fish and olive oil  is known to prevent heart disease, now it turned out, it can even beat cholesterol lowering drugs. Twelve hundred patients with a history of a heart disease have been followed in the trial with unexpected results. The prescription drugs, such as statins, which were previously believed to be the best way in preventing early death from heart disease, were effective in only about 24%, while the Mediteranean diet proved to be successful at 37%.

According to the researchers, the suggestion for those with heart problems would now be, it is best to stick to prescription drugs in combination with the Mediterranean diet.
