The maturing industry

Fashion suffers from a bad case of ageism. Majority of faces, from the ad girls to catwalk models, are very young. Now, the industry is slowly maturing.

In a few days the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue will show just how the tide is turning. The iconic magazine will present three page advertisement titled #SwimSexy to promote the idea allure has no age or size limit. Alongside two curvy models in gold bikinis the star of the show will be 55 years old Nicola Griffin. She will be the oldest model ever to appear on the swim issue’s pages, yet the decision comes as no surprise.

In the US alone, women over 50 own more than three-fourths of the nation’s financial wealth. They are not only the richest, but also the healthiest and the most active generation of females in the history. By spending 2.5 times what the average person consumes mature women have a huge impact on the leisure industry.

The generation that has seen their role being transformed from housewives to prime consumers is now changing the market. Nicola, who was only three when the first Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue was published says about her new career, my children had recently flown the nest and I was looking for new opportunities…that was the beginning of a new chapter in my life; life as a mature model.
