Celebration for women after the UK election

May 8, 2015

Yesterday’s election brought a stunning victory for British women. One in three MPs is now female, a record number of women in the Parliament.

With 36 per cent of female candidates, the Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon apparently made politics look more representative. She did not fall off the glass cliff, quite on the contrary, her party won almost all the seats in Scotland. Last, but not least, her candidate Mhairi Black has become the youngest MP since 1667, when that was exclusively a man’s job.

No matter whether you agree with politics or not, the Parliament now better reflects the gender balance of the society and that certainly cannot be a bad thing.
