France banning overly thin models

April 24, 2015

After Israel, France is the next country, banning excessively thin models by law. The capital of fashion recognised misrepresentation of the female body in the media and on the catwalks. From now on modelling houses and agents are banned to employ models with body index below 18 or face high fines and even a jail sentence.

The move from the country, which is proud of its tradition and has a fashion industry worth tens of billions of euros, does not come as a complete surprise. The legislation is part of a campaign against anorexia and made it illegal to condone this medical condition. Last, but not least, re-touched photos, altering the bodily appearance are also regulated in France. The commercial photographs depicting a model must carry a clear message stating the image had been manipulated.
