No artificial flavors or colors

In a surprising move, Nestle announced the removal of all artificial flavourings from their products, sold in the USA. The Swiss food giant is listening to consumers, who are increasingly worried about additives in food. In the recent survey more than 60 percent of Americans admitted to avoid buying food with artificial colours or flavours.

There are around 3,000 different additives used in our food. The manufacturers use it mainly to create the illusion a product contains certain ingredient, that is actually not there. Spanning from naturally produced flavours and colorants, like blends of spices, to complicated compounds mimicking natural chemical structures, all to trick the buds and the eyes. Additives are usually used in small amounts and must be certified before they reach the market. Therefore scientists dismiss accusations some chemicals may be harmful to health. Yet consumers are still questioning both licensing and safety of products and this lack of trust is putting strain on the 24 billion worth industry of food colorants and flavourings.

Last year, social media put public attention on an ingredient in Subway’s bread, azodicarbonamide, which is also used in yoga mats. The company swiftly removed the foaming agent, even though it is still widely used in other bread products. Like some other food manufacturers before, Nestle decided not to take any chances. All of their 250 products sold on the US market will be labelled “no artificial flavors or colors” by the end of the year.
