It runs in the family

December 11, 2014

Start-ups are in high demand these days and venture capitalists are constantly looking for bright beginners to bet on.  The most successful business environment however, seem to be the family.

In Europe family businesses account for between 65 to 80 percent of all companies. They proved to be more resilient in the present economic climate and even generate significantly higher returns, called the family premium. Family businesses have created leaders in many sectors like perfumes and personal hygiene, clothing, food, or even machinery. Does that mean, business sense run in the family? Experts analyzing family feuds believe they found an important ingredient behind their success. Giving business the family name makes it more personal, so the customers associate the company with a real person. It goes the other way around as well. Working for a business that has the same name as you do, is pushing family members to work harder.

Last but not least, there were times when women could not lead at all. They were however, every day involved in management decisions of family companies. Does that mean that the secret of their success has something to do with both parents working together and teaching children to do the same?
