Crop top revival

December 1, 2014

This spring Chanel took crop top to the extreme, presenting a dress that is using optical illusion to achieve unnaturally pinched waist. For those linking the style to fitness enthusiasts whose hard work and deprivation would, without showing toned bellies, go by unnoticed, this is bad news.

The top with the lower part cut off appeared in the cult film Flashdance and gained popularity in the 80s due to the new craze, the aerobics. Jane Fonda made millions of women buy VCRs, so they could exercise in front of their TVs. In the comfort of their living rooms women undressed to only tights and cut off t-shirts and when they started to flock to group exercises, did not bother to change again, simply adding leg warmers for some extra comfort.

This time around crop tops are everywhere. Matched with skirts or dresses are seen in offices and on the streets, they even appear on red carpets and the catwalks of luxury brands. Let us hope the 80s revival will now stop, before it comes to the hairstyles of the era.
