3D industy playing with toys

November 13, 2014

With meagre 100,000 printers being sold last year, the 3D industry is constantly on the hunt for new customers. Might toys be the answer to the underutilised technology?

Hasbro, the company behind My Little Pony has signed a partnership with Shapeways, one of the leaders in the 3D business. In their quest to keep pace and generate some marketing buzz, the venture is offering customers unique artwork, not available in shops. The pieces are printed in plastic polymer, which feels like sandstone and should have artistic value.

This however, is not the only marriage of 3D with the figurines. Last year British ASDA began using 3D printers allowing shoppers to make their own statues. The printer makes a quick scan and creates 8in model from ceramic powder for £60 pounds. Should we soon expect children around Christmas tree playing with mini relatives?
