Selling with scent

May 30, 2014

It used to be a privilege of bakers to lure with a scent of freshly baked bread. Now, retailers are trying to use the same old trick to personalise shopping experience and improve sales. Consumers tend to linger longer, spend more and report a better experience when they are shopping in a scented environment.

Since impulses from the nose travel directly to the emotion and memory centres in our brain, we cannot control the feelings they provoke. That makes smell an excellent seller. Carefully crafted scents are being pumped through heating and air conditioning systems in shops, to recall emotions and affect the costumer decisions. Scent marketing is on the rise. As smells are associated with place where we smelled them or who was with us at the time, we have a profound emotional reaction, without knowing it. Nothing is more memorable than smell and ambient scenting is becoming the fragrance of choice for retailers.
