Please, hand the wine list

November 21, 2013

After passing the French and Italians in wine consumption, US have become the largest wine market. Taking into account that more than half of wine consumers in the States are women, are wine sellers ready to embrace these changes?

They should be. We are talking about 360 million cases of bottles per year, with the retail value of $34.6 billion. Contrary to men, when women choose in which vino to indulge, it is not about year, geographical origin or grape variety, it is about price, label design and brand name. Even popular belief, that every time a woman is being asked to choose wine, Chardonnay is the answer, should fade away. Women are increasingly discovering sophistication, refined taste and femininity of red wine. These changes are not taking place in the US alone. That is why wine merchants as well as sommeliers should reconsider to whom they will hand the wine list next time.
