The Venus is ruling the world

November 8, 2013

We are constantly bombarded with images, now think of a single idol reigning the world. In our time an average individual is exposed to over 20,000 depictions of human body per day.  However, at the dawn of humanity, one powerful image was above all, the Venus.

We can find it everywhere, from the Pyrenees in the West, to the plains of Siberia in the East. The same ideal of a female body is found carved in stone, bone or made out of clay. She always has grossly exaggerated hips, breasts and thighs, while other body details are being neglected.

The most famous of all is the Venus of Willendorf, yet hundreds of other figurines representing the Palaeolithic ideal of beauty have been were unearthed.  The most special archaeologist only recently stumbled upon, is the Venus of Hohle Fels. It represents the first known object of figurative art in human history.

The purpose of a Venus figurine is still a mystery. Some see her as the fertility icon, others as pornographic imagery or simply a depiction of real women of that time. Due to the view a woman would have on herself while looking down at her body, one theory even suggests Venuses are all self-portraits of female sculptors. Whatever the idea behind, the representation of a female body remains as powerful as it was 40,000 years ago.
