German gender equality fatigue

October 2, 2013

Gender issues have never been top priority for Angela Merkel. Maybe this time she will change her mind. Despite the landslide win of her party, she is courting centre left SPD for the missing five seats in the Bundestag. Gender inequality however, was one of the main campaign issues for her future junior partner, SPD. They made a promise to their voters, to tackle it by a set of policies, including female quotas.

During negotiating the Grand Coalition, quotas on corporate boards and cancelling childcare subsidies for stay at home moms may become a ticket for Angela to form the government. But German men are apparently not as keen as the SPD. A recent opinion poll showed, 64% of men feel that there is enough gender equality in the country and 28% in fact think, it is gone too far.
