Breadwinners in heels

May 31, 2013

In the 60’s only one out of ten American mothers were household breadwinners. Since then, a lot has changed. The latest Pew Research shows 40% of today’s American families have women as the sole or primary source of income.

Vast majority of female breadwinners used to be single mothers, whereas now, the trend is shifting. More and more highly educated, married women are replacing their husbands as the sole breadwinners, mostly because their incomes are higher than their husbands’. Still, two thirds of breadwinner moms remain to be single parents, trying to juggle between work and upbringing of their children.

In the States nearly half of the labour force is now women. All these working moms, not only turned the traditional family roles around, but also changed the position of women in the society. It looks like Americans are comfortable with that. While asked, 80% of people rejected the idea that women should return to their traditional roles.
