Art piece itself does not disclose the gender of its creator, therefore the persistence of inequality in the art world remains a paradox. Female artists exhibit less and their work is worth less. However, while looking at the results of auctions, Cindy Sherman stands out. Two years ago her photograph sold for a staggering $3.9 million. She is the only woman on The most expensive photographs list.

This American artist is best known for her conceptual self-portraits. Sherman gained international recognition with Untitled Film Stills, a series of 69 black and white photographs, where she appears as a stereotypical female character from 50s and 60s films. Working as her own model for over three decades, Sherman captured herself in a range of personas. From a Hitchcock heroine, a busty Monroe, a corpse, a Botticelli to a mutilated hermaphrodite sex doll. She has been all and more.
