Man Ray on display

September 21, 2012

American artist Man Ray was a tireless experimenter of Dada and later Surrealistic movement. He is not only one of the leading artists of the avant-garde era, but also a known fashion photographer and creator of many portraits.

In early 1920s he befriended a bohemian model and performer by the name Kiki de Montparnasse, who became his loyal muse. Kiki, also slang for vagina, posed for this famous photograph in turban, but this was not the only wordplay Man Ray liked. The title of the photograph is Le Violon d’Ingres which means Ingre’s Violin, but in French also stands for hobby or past time. You will soon be able to admire Man Ray’s works in The National Portrait Gallery in London.
