Gender issues in nursery

September 8, 2012

Who would have thought among most sought-after professions in Germany are male nursery teachers. While other industries are seeking to have at least third of female workers on board, kindergartens can only dream of having those many men, with current statistics standing at 3,5%.

Parents in Germany are now demanding more men to look after their children. The Ministry of Family Affairs conducted survey, which showed more than third of German parents prefer day care facilities with male employees. Higher education and income level parents tend to favour gender balanced nurseries the most. The government is now trying to close the gap, but the task seems to be more challenging than previously thought. While trying to employ more men in childcare industry, all enthusiasm seems to wane with a salary.
