Space smells of summer

August 6, 2012

In a couple of days meteor shower will lighten the night sky again. While gazing into the universe, have you ever asked yourself, what does it smell like? Were you in space, it would certainly not be a good idea to remove your helmet and try to taste it. But astronauts said, whilst returning to spaceship, a certain smell was hanging in the air, the smell of the universe. It is similar to charred steak or something metallic.

The smell lingered for a while on their clothes and other fabric as well. One astronaut said it brought back memories of his college summers, when making money by doing repairs with the welding torch. It reminded him of pleasant sweet smelling welding fumes. That is the smell of space, he said.

But we do not necessarily have to go to space to found out what it smells like. Scientist can predict that just by detecting the chemical compound of a certain corner of the space. For instance, the dust cloud at the centre of the Milky Way includes the molecule, as the one giving flavour to raspberries and rum. We could say space smells like barbecue and raspberry cupcakes.
