Hermit kingdom in colour

July 26, 2012

After decades of drab uniforms and billowy dresses, North Koreans recently caught a glimpse of bright colours, heels and miniskirts. For forty years now female figure was absent from the public eye, with wives and mistresses of the leaders shrouded in mystery. The last woman to serve the regime propaganda was the supreme leader’s grandmother, titled as the Founding Mother and Heroine of the Anti-Japanese Revolution.

Now suddenly on official events the country’s new dictator Kim Jong Un had a mysterious woman by his side. Immediately the whole world was questioning her identity, speculating is she a sister, wife or a mistress. The secret female was casually disclosed yesterday on the state television. During a broadcast of an amusement park opening, the presenter slipped in the all important news “Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol Ju were present at the ceremony.”

Is the appearance of the first lady only used by the state propaganda to perceive the young ruler more mature and in control over octogenarian top brass, or will bright colours, heels and miniskirts stem the long awaited changes in North Korea, is yet to be seen.
