Walk to the guillotine

June 12, 2012

The shoe heel is getting bigger by year and so are the prices of designer footwear. Recent trends are showing us the less functional the shoe is, the more celebrated it is. It has happened before, with dire consequences.

The Sun King, Louis XIV often wore intricate heels as tall as five inches (12 cm), known also as Louis heels. He went even further by decreeing only nobility could wear heels that were red and no one’s heels could be higher than his own. It did not last.

Louis heels disappeared with the revolution. His ancestor Napoleon in an attempt to show equality banished high heels altogether. Despite the Napoleonic Code against high heels, Louis’s wife Marie Antoinette walked to the guillotine wearing two-inch heels.
