Crazy women

November 22, 2011

In former times hysteria was attributed to women only. The prescribed therapy for married women recommended more sex with their husbands. Single females were told to seek pelvic massages from qualified technicians, to produce hysterical paroxysm, today known as an orgasm.

However crazy this might sound, there seems to be some truth in relating women to mental conditions. MedCo recently released statistical data revealing, that one in four American women is on antidepressants. In men, that number is 15%. Where is the underlying cause for such disparity?

One reason might be that women are more likely to seek medical help. Consequently, Valium is prescribed just to shut them up. Another possibility might be, widespread psychological malaise is a symptom of abuse. Data shows that one out of every six American women has either been the victim of attempted or completed rape. For men, that number is 3%. Victims of these crimes feel traumatized, often experiencing depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal thoughts. Western medicine treats these conditions mostly with mental health medications.
