Protein and cards

October 19, 2011

Eating large amounts of protein may be harmful. It is proven to be associated with a number of diseases, including cancer. The daily intake has been steadily increasing, and so have the health related problems. We know protein helps our body repairing damaged cells and building new ones. How much protein is enough than?

According to the World health organisation, carbohydrates should provide the bulk of our energy requirements. Fruits and vegetables should be consumed in abundance. As far as protein is concerned, it should represent only 10-15% of our daily calorie intake.

What does this mean in terms of food choices? Majority of us can meet our daily protein requirement by eating an egg and a serving of meat or fish, as big as a deck of cards. Meat may be replaced also by beans or chickpeas. Whole grains, seeds, and some vegetables also contain protein, which should be taken into account.

The average person eats about double the recommended intake, so next time you go shopping, make sure you have a deck of cards at hand.
