…so the rest can follow

“Gender-dominated environments are not good… particularly in the financial sector where there are too few women…In gender-dominated environments, men have a tendency to…show how hairy chested they are, compared with the man who’s sitting next to them. I honestly think that there should never be too much testosterone in one room.”

These are the words of Christine Lagarde, the first female chair of a large international law company and the first woman ever to become minister of the economic affairs of a G8 country. She enjoys great trust among world leaders and believes women in high places are essential.

“I love cooking,” she said about herself “not for myself alone. Cooking is about giving. And I’ve got a beautiful rose garden that I absolutely adore. I haven’t seen much of my roses this summer. I long for the time when I can…(she broke off wistfully).” She would like to spend more time at her house in Normandy, cooking for her family or making apricot and quince jam.

Christine Legarde has been the first many times before. Today, she will become the first female to head the International Monetary Fund and thus one of the most influential women in the world.
