We can still make it

February 14, 2011

German government is less inclined to enact women quotas than the French and Spanish counterparts are. But something needs to be done. The largest European economy is, according to experts, facing a shortage of skilled workers. Due to growth forecasts there will be 2 million vacant posts in the German economy by 2020. Angela Merkel obviously favours the idea to fill this gap with its own intelligentsia instead of immigration.  There are many German parents that chose children over career.

For some time now, women do not want to choose between family and work. In addition the idea of an absent dad, who has spends his time with children only during weekends is long gone. The federal government has now signed the nonbinding agreement with business. Employers promised to create family friendly work environment. Many see it as business as usual and implying the history will repeat. It seems however the German gender debate is here to stay. The first evaluation of this voluntary agreement will take place in two years time.
