Passion for fashion

February 1, 2011

A response on the Feminet campaign draw attention to another industry in which women are better paid than men – fashion industry. Female models in fashion highly surpass their men colleagues, both in income and influence.

In the 90s Linda Evangelista among best paid supermodels presumably stated: “I won’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day.”  An anonymous male model could at best count on one tenth of that money. Insiders claim it is not just the pay, but also the attitude towards models, that put women in substantially better position. But there is price for it? Women models weight 45 to 55 kg at average height of 173 cm. We can assume this can be achieved only through starvation…not to mention the impacts on how average women or girls see themselves. Twenty years ago, the average model weighed 8 per cent less than the average woman—but today’s models weigh 23 per cent less.
